Final Reflection

A fabulous course, so many ideas! Though I have had an iPad for a while I wanted to learn more and see some practical applications associated with the primary classroom. These modules did that! I will go back to these modules and my blog when I do programming for next term and see what I can incorporate as our school has BYOD and is looking at BYODD for next year and I want to get the best out of these opportunities.

I commented on the blog below which also gave me a few more ideas, particularly with reading and blogging:

Module Six

My understanding of the model

'Redefinition' is about the teacher fully understanding that various devices are 'tools' for learning and not to replace the learning. Teachers need to not just download apps and say 'play', the app needs to have a purpose in the teaching. Therefore 'Modification' means that the teacher modifies the program already in place to incorporate devices ie instead of putting a picture on the smart board use 'Epic Citadel' to allow the students to explore then write, use the app 'Angle Metre' to measure angles, use the camera to 'Skitch' to label 3D objects in the environment. 'Augmentation' to use the device to completely use the device to enter a digital world such as that of Augmented Reality. Apps include AR Robot, Virtual Snow, AR Spaceship, AR Dinopark, Spider-Man AR, Money and Live Butterflies which can all be used for various KLA's. The best blog I found about Augmented Reality is
By Nathan Jones.
Finally 'Substitution' which is really hard for most teachers and let's say parents, letting go of the old pen and paper and using the device wholly. Parents like to see books and assessment results and most teachers always like to be able to provide the physical evidence.

Thank you for introducing me to Skitch, another fabulous app! As mentioned above you could use it to take photos in maths and label angles, sides etc etc, you could use it in science to documented experiments, you could use it as part of Religion and freeze frames annotating on speech or commentating.

I have to admit I do like Blogger as a choice for blogging as it is easy to use, I will however investigate the use if the others particularly in the yes of the students to see if it would be easy for them..... However it would be always their choice.....

Module Five

This is the module I was waiting for! How to create your own ebook - thank you for suggesting numerous apps that could be used for this! Now to experiment with a few and see what I like the most!

Year 6 boys come to mind when trying to motivate boys to read. I like the idea of taping their voices using Quick Voice or Voice Memos particularly as they can email it to you, even those who don't particularly like reading aloud.

Making your own ebooks is fabulous then they can be stored in their library and be easily accessible whenever you want the students to work on them....one idea comes to mind when making ebooks is the end of year Year 6 / Buddy Christmas book. Year 6 would thoroughly enjoy this. Even just, setting the year 6 students up for year 7, have year six prepare study notes in an ebook for each KLA at the end of a term or for preparation for assessments etc. For teachers with younger students could they be used as a digital portfolio?! Or even a class book so that parents can see the learning staking place in the class.....

I have to say 'Appitic' and 'apps in education' I use all the time! They are fabulous resources!

This is one module I will be definitely be coming back too!

Module Four

I love Dropbox!
So easy to use and to save documents! The only thing I find with Dropbox is when you are trying to retrieve something from Dropbox to your laptop and want to save it to your laptop it is a little more difficult particularly from a HTC to a Mac laptop..... But it is fabulous to use when you want to show documents or photos if they are not saved on the device taking up storage space....

The possibilities with neu.Annotate are endless. So many times do we print out worksheets and samples of text types and ask students to highlight using highlighters is amazing. Considering most of the worksheets and samples are electronic, the students can have a Dropbox account or even use their google account and retrieve a PDF that can be annotated together.....the forwarded back to the teacher if necessary.... I can't wait to try this out with my year 5 kids......

Module Three

Love it, love it, love it! What a fabulous module! Really useful!

The App I chose was 'Epic Citadal' which matches up with the iLearn framework concept of 'Multi-modal Literacy Skills'. This app allows the students to explore and use their imagination in a medieval world. This is an excellent app for upper primary where once the students have explored they can write a diary, journal, short story or novel on what they can see, hear, feel and smell. An excellent idea would be to use Google Docs and use it as a whole class story. Each student writes a line and the students need to add a line that would make the story make sense, this will enable the students to see other class mates work and assist in developing individual vocabulary.

Therefore I chose the awesome template 'Critical Evaluation of a Content Based Mobile App' to evaluate the effectiveness of the app 'Epic Citadal'. This template will be well used in the evaluation of apps in my classroom from now on. 'Epic Citadal' fits into Blooms Taxonomy beautifully in the concept of 'Creating'. The app can be used in the KLA of English  (Curriculum Connection) and can by differentiated according to what you request the students to write ie. from the first person perspective, or even from the third person perspective to even what you are requesting the students to write ie. novel, journal, script etc. the app is easy to use and does not require any instructions, the students will need to use their imagination to get the benefit of using the app. The app has sound, and although it is set in medieval times the authenticity could be questioned. Students can report using Google Docs, report on each other and can be assessed by the teacher online.

Again a fabulous module! Thank you!

Module Two

When you first buy an iPad Ll you think of is how many 'free' apps you can find and how educational they are and you forget about the built in apps that already come on the iPad.
Photo booth
I use or should I say my nephew and students use effortlessly - however the quality I find is not that good. I do like the different visions that a photo can be adjusted too and the ease of sharing.
Notes
I use these all the time, however soon did I learn that as soon as you hit the 'Bin' picture it means that your note is gone for good! Not that it goes in the trash. Although it only provides the basic functions it come in very handy when you need to jot something down.

Although I was unable to retrieve the link to the Apple iPad User Guide however I did download an iBook titled 'Hot Apps 4 HOTS' - a fabulous resource. So many ideas for higher order thinking and terrific ideas that would engage students with many purposeful links to other sites.

Module One

My thought as I was completing this module was that the use of iBooks is undervalued. Now I just want to learn how to make one. It is such a fabulous application to use, particularly with older students first find a class novel on iTunes to read together, summarise and progress to asking the older students make an iBook. Infants students love anything with an iPad, so finding iBooks to suit this age would engage younger students in reading more. I am sure that there is an app that would assist the older students making an iBook for the younger students.
Even though I have had my iPad for a few years now I still am finding new things and wanting to learn how to use it to its full potential. I have enjoyed revisiting the functions and want to start downloading more books and like I said before make iBooks.
Having the new update on my iPad I did notice that a few things are different in the module. For example having the 'Share' option when you can 'Copy, Define, Highlight, Note and Search' which in this world we should encourage. Also the way we now 'switch' and 'close' apps is a little different.
